Sections and Formatting

Like most research papers, action research paper will be divided into different sections, or chapters. These sections should never be forgotten or altered; they are crucial to presenting your findings in an educated, clear and concise way. Every action research paper should possess the following sections:

  • An introduction. In the introduction, you should enlighten your audience on your thesis and the reason for your study. Why is this topic significant? Why are you addressing it? Also make sure that your audience understand critical terms that may not be in standard language usage.
  • Research and methods. Next, you’ll have to elaborate on any current or former research that may contribute to your study. Preferably, this should be in a separate section from your procedures. Your methods – your procedures governing your action research – should be clearly and intimately outlined. It’s important that you explain every aspect, step, subject, data analysis techniques and environmental situation in this section (these will be crucial to the outcome of your research).
  • Discoveries. After you’ve illuminated your audience on the basic outline of your research experiment, it’s time to implement and share your findings. In this section, make it very clear what the results were of your research. You will have to make it clear if the results addressed your original question, and how they answered that question. Include all your unbiased, physical data in this section before coming to a conclusion.
  • Conclusion. A conclusion to an action research paper project should do more than summarize and pose some answer to the thesis. It should inspire further discussion and involvement from the readers. In this section, include any possible flaws in the research and it’s applications to the subject area. Remember, as a good researcher you should always weigh the variables; make sure the implications, limitations and applications of the experiment results are clearly expressed. Come to a conclusion, but make sure that conclusion is well-defined and adequately evaluated.
  • Appendix and works cited. These final pages explain definitions and give credit to any outside research or individuals that helped with your paper.
