Reliable Tips on How to Write a Proposal for a Research Paper

When writing any decent research paper, the first thing to write is the proposal. The purpose the document is to inform the governing body of your paper what you plan to write about. This might be a professor, a grant board, or some other person or organization. There are some goals that this is trying to accomplish, namely getting approval to commit research and write about the topic you have chosen, or answer the question you ask. At this point, you are going to have to support a thesis of some type or another, so it is important that your proposal be of high quality. Here are some tips for writing a proposal.

  1. Make sure that your proposal is formatted properly. This is going to vary a bit depending on your research topic and the audience you are writing it for, but generally scientific or technical papers use the APA format and the humanities, such as various arts or English papers, use MLA format. Take some time, familiarize yourself with both styles, and use the one that applies to you.
  2. Think about your audience. Since you are looking to get approval, think about the requirements that you are going to have to supersede. The big thing is to make sure that you are catering your ideas for those to who read them. Consider their ideology and what they are looking for; if your research aligns with their ideology, and then feel free to speak to that.
  3. Make sure that you are concise. Verbosity does not do in a proposal, as the reader is trying to determine the worth of the research. What is going on is that they are looking for information, so any superfluous words will be looked down upon, as they do nothing but obscure the meaning of what you are trying to convey.
  4. In addition to the above, try to make sure that your research is innovate and interesting. You should be seeking to do research that only you can do, as each person has something unique to offer to a field. Giving less than that that is the way to get ahead. So make sure that you put thought, effort, and care into choosing your topic and what to write about. After all, if they wanted to do research that someone else could do, they would just ask the other person. So make sure that your research proposal reflects you.
